    Story

Autism can affect many families in so many different ways. It is a life long condition and is never going to disappear. With a good support network and having people around you that understand what are going through can make all the difference. It helps to reduce the isolation, stress and lack of understanding that surrounds the misconception of Autism and others that have aspergers.

My son was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder 6 years ago when he was 31 years of age, he is now 37. Now 6 years later I find my son living a fuller life than previously before his diagnosis. The group York Autism Carers was created to give advice to other carers and parents who have adult children. It enables them the chance of some help to be steered in the right direction. Because if you don't know who to talk to and who to see you maybe in the same boat.It truly is a mindfield trying to find out where help is available. In the beginning getting the necessary help and support was extremely difficult. Now that my son has been diagnosed, he is living a fuller life. We are approved by social services they know about the group as well as York Carers Centre. I do get emails from the social services about other parents wanting to join the group. We are not funded we meet once a month in the local library café to discuss topics as we cant afford a room. I'm running the Brighton Marathon for the group as it is very difficult to get funding. As Carers, taking time out and having time for yourself can be very limited. With some funding it would enable the group to take some respite and offer other carers the chance to relax and chill even if its for a few hours.

Support with likeminded carers can make all the difference as if offers the time and chance of making connections with others and sharing information and support. We as a group feel that we need to make a voice and be heard and bring about more awareness.

    Many Thanks
