    Story

My daughter Ruby was born with a severe dairy allergy, Ruby outgrew this but had a reaction to Peanuts when she was almost three which was terrifying. Ruby is now highly allergic to Peanuts and some tree nuts and developed Asthma when she was aged seven. Ruby loves to dance, sing and act and I have tried to make sure that her allergies will not stop us having fun.

Ruby suffers from a constant battle with severe anxiety due to her Peanut allergy, We have to scrutinise every ingredient label. Ruby's diet is limited, there are a limited amount of restaurants we can go to, Ruby can never eat takeaways, Indian or Chinese food. The majority of chocolate and other treats are off limits due to manufacturing methods. Ruby has had to miss several social events as unfortunately not everyone realises that allergies such as Ruby's are life threatening. As Ruby's Mum I have constantly had to educate her school/family/friends which at times has been incredibly hard to watch my daughter being excluded from events due to her allergies.

Ruby has to carry 2 epi pens at all times, Ruby's allergy causes her constant stress and anxiety and it breaks my heart everyday to see my child having endure these stresses at such a young age. People assume that having an allergy will just cause a mild stomach ache or diarrhea, in Ruby's cause this could not be further from the truth, if Ruby ingested a peanut there is a 95% chance she would develop anaphylyxsis which would require an epi pen and immediate hospitalisation.

My wish is to eliminate Ruby's stress and for her to be able to go out with her friends when she is a teenager without the stress and worry a bite of food might end her up in A&E or worse. I have done my research and there is a Peanut Immunotherapy treatment available from Cambridge Allergy Clinic which costs £16,920 (not including travelling to 10 appointments & after care). I have been hoping for the last two years this treatment will become more affordable or available o the NHS, the likelihood of this is very doubtful therefore I am trying to raise the funds myself. I am a single working parent to Ruby, I plan to arrange several fund raising events to help achieve our goal.

    Oral Immunotherapy Treatment (OIT)

This treatment is currently only available at the Cambridge Allergy Clinic and will cost £16,920 + expenses + follow up appointments. OIT would involve us going to Cambridge on a regular basis for several weeks for Ruby to take minute amounts of peanut protein that would be gradually built up to increase her tolerance. Results so far have been amazing and for those children who it had proved successful they are now eating several peanuts a day.

I believe this treatment would be life changing for Ruby and myself, although its not a cure, it would mean Ruby could eat anywhere she wanted to without having the constant worry she might suffer anaphylaxsis.
