Story
Myself and Katy are running The Saints Way in September - 28 hilly miles across Cornwall.
I'm planning to fundraise for The Perfect Hug - formed by one of my best friends - the fantastic Chevi Mcilroy.
A couple of years ago Chevi was diagnosed with being a carrier of the BRAC1 gene meaning that she had a much greater risk of developing certain cancers. The difficult decision was made to have preventative surgery and so Chevi underwent both a hysterectomy and was about to have a double mastectomy when cancer was unfortunately discovered in her one of her breasts.
Already facing long recoveries and a huge mental, emotional and physical struggle the surgeries were brought forward in order to remove the cancer. Chevi endured long operations and months of painful recovery.
Whilst in the hospital Chevi was presented with a small heart shaped pillow which is used to provide comfort for those recovering from breast surgery. Donated to the hospital this pillow isn't something routinely given to every patient. A small object provided a huge amount of comfort to Chevi - physically and mentally - as it proved a reminder to others to be careful near her, whilst also being just the right size and shape to bring some relief.
The pillow really was a perfect hug.
The kind of person Chevi is - she saw a challenge and decided to embrace it. Chevi wants anyone that undergoes similar surgery to have one of these pillows and has since been building a group of volunteers - gathering fabric, sewing, stuffing, packing, delivering to hospitals, organising, advertising, fundraising. The CIC Perfect Hug was born and continues to grow - with my dear friend Chevi at the very heart of it all.
Along with my friend Katy I will be running the Saints Way (Padstow to Fowey - one side of Cornwall to another) in September - 28 hilly miles and very much out of my comfort zone. This is nothing in comparison to Chevi's journey and so I'm fundraising to help support the Perfect Hug to help get more heart shaped pillow out across the South West to those that need them.
