Story

Amnesty International's local groups are the heart of the work of Amnesty. The local Liverpool group works actively on campaigns, such as women's rights, and supports human rights defenders across the world. I have been a member of Amnesty for over 17 years and have worked on the cases of the UAE Human rights defenders Mohammed Al-Roken and Ahmed Mansoor for the last 4 years. But this year I realised another dimension of the importance of local Amnesty groups. Several members of the local Liverpool group were refugees and the warm welcoming attitude of the Liverpool group enabled them to meet like - minded people, to share their thoughts and stories. Many of the group members were politically persecuted, had fled their countries and had experienced an extreme injustice. They attended the meetings because their own situation had made them realise the importance of human rights activism of organisations like Amnesty. They joined the local group to make a difference for other human rights defenders. This showed me how invaluable the work of local Amnesty groups is, because they don't only make a difference for human rights defenders abroad, but are also an important place for human rights defenders in the UK. And so I would like to fundraise for the local Amnesty Liverpool group, because the Liverpool groups struggles with high costs and low financial support. And that's why my husband Chris and I decided to fundraise with this event specifically for the Liverpool Amnesty International group!

On the 10.9.2019 Chris and I will attempt the Großglockner (3798m) (highest mountain of Austria) via the Stüdlridge, which is a striking line to the peak coming from south. Climbing Grossglockner is a serious undertaking, because it requires alpine and glacier traverse experience and it will take us two days to summit it.

Please donate to support the amazing work of the local Liverpool Amnesty group!!!
