Story

LIYSF is a non-for profit organisation established in 1959 that aims to bring young people from different nations together to learn about each other and our different cultures through a shared passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Across the world, such organisations have names like NGOs, foundations or similar. In the UK and in our case, LIYSF is a social enterprise in the form of a community interest company (CIC), limited by guarantee. LIYSF CIC does not have shareholders and profits are re-invested for our community purpose interest.

As a CIC we are set up to provide benefit to our community, with a clearly defined community interest purpose. LIYSF’s purpose is to provide benefit to students across the world aged 16 – 21 years old that are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Aiming to give a deeper insight into science and its applications for the benefit of all humankind and to develop a greater understanding between young people of all nations, LIYSF CIC organises the annual London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) with the idea of bringing young people from different nations together to learn about each other and our different cultures through a shared passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The two-week residential event is held annually at Imperial College London and the Royal Geographical Society, and comprises lectures and demonstrations from leading scientists, including Nobel Prize Winners, visits to industrial sites, research centers, scientific institutions and organisations, including world-class laboratories and universities.

LIYSF has worked hard to help those from disadvantaged backgrounds and to empower female scientists, as well as students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The strategy for the future is to ensure that global representation is seen at LIYSF and help more students reach further. Just one example is our scholarship scheme, which we are growing.

LIYSF was established in 1959, in the aftermath of the world wars, placing equal focus on cultural understanding as well as science learning and discovery. Since its founding, LIYSF has changed the lives of over 24,000 students and counting.

Our mission is to empower young people from all backgrounds to pursue their potential in STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). We believe that connecting with others from across the globe and exchanging ideas is vital to form and establish networks. We enable discussion about global issues and scientific advancements in our world today, equipping our students to take their place in the world as a global citizen.
