Story
Overview
This October, I will be travelling to Uganda to partake in a number of voluntary activities. This includes visiting and helping out at the Mummy Foundation and the M-Lisada orphanage, building facilities at the Hidden Treasures Primary School, and working on projects for Soft Power Education UK.
M-Lisada
Their mission is to reduce the number of children living on the streets in Uganda by providing them with a home and education. They have reclaimed over 400 children from the streets, housing 80 ranging from age 3-17. An additional 80 children come in from the streets each day for showers, food, couselling, music lessons, a safe place to play and support. Due to insignificant finances, they are unable to house these extra children.
Hidden Treasures Primary School
The school is in the heart of the Katwe slum, and the pupils come from the poorest section of the community. Many have lost parents and other family members from AIDS, and some are refugees from the Northern Conflict. The school recieves no funding from the state and relies on donations.
Soft Power Education
SPE is a British registered charity and Uganda NGO, working with communities since 1999 with the mission of 'improving quality of life through education.' Their vision is for 'an empower and self-sustaining society taking responsibility for its own development' and focus on three key areas; alternative education, livelihoods and school infrastructure.
