Story

Myself and my hubby Paul are taking part in the Great North Run 2018 which is on the 9th September. We are raising money for Great Aycliffe Cancer Support Group who help and support people affected by cancer. They help patients, carers and relatives as well as Newton Aycliffe they help members from all over the North East such as Bishop Auckland, Shildon, Spennymoor, Chilton, Ferryhill, Barnard Castle and many more areas. As well as having monthly meetings they take them on social outings for many getting a cancer diagnosis they become isolated and lose their friends so they reach out to those vulnerable and lonely people. They take them for meals so if they are on their own and don't have anyone to help cook them a hot Meal the group makes sure that they have a hot Meal, also when on the trips it lets the members talk to each other as well as making friends.
They also do Patient Transport for those patients going through Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy the drivers are all DBS checked and have all the necessary paperwork this service is free to members so that they not worrying on how to get to their appointments. Due to cuts around County Durham the ambulance service don't let cancer patients take anyone with them but they do as it's important for cancer patients to have that choice and for many they want that extra support. Also they now give out Chemo Bags for patients going through Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy they are made by cancer patients and inside include bottle of water, pen, notebook, tissues, ginger teabag, puzzle book and much more. The group has been going 4 years now and has over 100 members.
