    Story

Pedaleando por ellos! Cycling for them!

Hola a todos! Hi everyone! (ENGLISH BELOW)

    Pablo

In Buenos Aires, Argentina, a long time ago, a little boy is born in a traumatic delivery, resulting in severe life-long learning difficulties.

Undiagnosed and unsupported till the age of five years old, his mother becomes his protector, champion and support worker all in one. This is at a time when expectations for children like him were low, especially for those coming from unprivileged families. Added to this, the area in which they lived was largely untouched by governmental funding and support, so this kind of families were left to fend for themselves, many choosing to close their doors and hide their “different” children at home.

Even when he gains a place in a specialist school, his mother still finds herself consumed with worry about what the future will hold for her kid after schooling.

Undeterred, this mother sets about creating her own solution, with a group of like-minded parents in a similar situation, and in 1993 after a lot of effort, the doors of “Los Horneritos” Day Centre open for the first time.

Here, adults with wide-ranging physical and mental disabilities meet daily to eat, enjoy activities such as theatre and art sessions, and most importantly, earn a living. As well as offering breakfast, lunch, a reassuring daily routine and social interaction with good friends, “Los Horneritos” Day Centre supports its service-users to produce a range of craft and handiwork which provide each craft men/women with an income, when sold.

The support the Day Care offers is invaluable to its users and their families. It offers independence, self-respect and companionship to those often left unsupported by society and the state. Everything they do there is the biggest show of love and effort.

For all those that know me and my family, you will know that this resilient woman cofounder of the centre is my aunty, and that this project is her raison d’etre.

So this is where you come in! This Wednesday 20th September 2017 I embark upon a journey from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, crossing the Pyrenees… BY BIKE! I will cycle around 600miles at heights of up to 3K metres above the sea level. So… If I survive the challenge, I might as well raise some money for them while I am at it! :D

Thank you so much to everybody who contributes, we are massively thankful, and remember the doors of “Los Horneritos” Day Centre are always open for you to come and see their amazing work!

I’ll update you in my progress as soon as signal allows!!
