Story
I am a mum of three whose children were so fortunate to have the technology and support to enable a wonderful home schooling experience last time. It was brought to all our attention that this is not the case for so many children across the country and that there is an enormous disparity between the “haves and have-nots” regarding home learning.
We have identified appropriate schools whose vulnerable children qualify for Free School Meals. We then created a “shopping” list for these schools to choose from, to provide to children who last time were left behind. The Head Teachers and Parents of these schools have identified items ranging from repurposed laptops and tablets all the way down to a pencil and ruler making a difference in a child's home learning experience.
During the first lockdown I really struggled as i don't have a computer or a printer, so my son fell very behind. My son is on the autistism pathway and I asked his teacher for help. Her response was "do your best".
I didn't have the resources to homeshool my 5 children. Their work was all set online and their school was very lax about it and not helpful at all! My auntie who lives 200 miles away printed worksheets off for us and posted them to me. My eldest who is doing his GCSEs is getting no support whatsoever.
As a single mother of 3 food bank user, i had to research and set most of my 3 children's work myself. We went on walks, cooked and did creative projects instead.
