Story
Whilst out in Northern Kenya last week I drove past a 6-year-old boy called Ltangenoi who was out alone herding his goats. Something caught my eye and I asked the driver to stop and reverse to get a better look at him as something didn't seem quite right. He approached with a bit of hesitation but it was clear that he was in an immense amount of pain. He still had a brave face and was continuing on with his duties. (Sorry for the graphic picture but I just want you to know what his poor little arm looks like)
We made contact with the father who couldn't quite believe that someone was reaching out to help him. He explained that he had spent close to $2,000 already for an operation at a local hospital which he had explained had almost broken him and the rest of the family and they couldn’t afford to go to another doctor.
The operation as you can see did not work and has left his son with an arm that doesn't work and Ltangenoi is still in incredible pain. I took the photo of the boy’s arm and reached out to a friend in Kenya, Julia Francombe who started the Samburu Trust - which works in community outreach, as well as reaching out to a friend of mine who is an orthopedic surgeon here in the UK who does a lot of training for the local Kenyan doctors. We discussed that the best doctor for the job is Dr. Ndanya, who I have actually have had the privilege of working with, who operates in a town called Nanyuki which is only a 4-hour drive (or a 3 to 4 day walk) from where the boy lives. We sent a car out to collect the boy and his father and bring him to Nanyuki for X-rays and surgery. He arrived last night and is now staying with Julia and she says he is loving her dogs! He has now been seen by Dr. Ndanya (photos attached) and his team and they are coming up with a plan of action. First step today is to get the infection and pain under control. The operation as well as pre/post op care will cost approximately $8,000 (£6,000). Any contribution that you could make would be greatly appreciated and will help to change this little boy’s life – time is of the essence and we hope to be able to schedule the operation some time next week, as soon as we can raise the funds.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and any little bit you can do to help is greatly appreciated and will make a huge difference to this little guy’s life.
