A small group and I will be travelling to Borneo in 2017 where we will be working alongside the MESCOT Project, which is situated deep in the rainforest. The conservation work here involves restoration of the community forest that was destroyed in the fires of 1998, removal of invasive plants and simple building projects such as boardwalk construction. Working alongside the villagers will help us develop a greater understanding of the issues they and many of Borneo’s communities face on a daily basis.
We will be staying in the villages of the Dusun people and accompanying them to their farms to plant crops and trekking with them into the nearby jungle to gather medicinal plants.
Our aim is to leave behind a legacy of sustainable development in the remote communities of Borneo by increasing access for tourism and aiding them with their daily tasks.
This project is important to me because it will give me first hand experience of global issues which I am aware of but have never been exposed to. I would like to give back to communities that haven't had the advantages of our society and system, and to learn from the experience of meeting these communities.
In order to participate in this expedition I have to raise a total of £3,395. So far I have raised £2,138 through events such as quiz nights, car boot sales and running a smoothie stall and lots of hard work. Also I am taking part in a tough mudder on the 17th of september, which is my first run/obstacle course I have ever entered! With a year to run I am hoping to raise £500 towards my remaining target and the rest through work and future events. This will be a life-changing experience for me as well as those who we are able to help.
