Story
It is official- we have gone crazy! Me, Tom, Jack and Lorna are going to cycle 100 miles a day every day for a week on an exercise bike!!! Week commencing 2nd August. That’s almost the distance of Lands End to John O’Groats...
Friends and family will also be carrying out other fund raising activities that we will share via this page, so watch this space.... See below for further details.
As many of you will know, my mum, Nicola Hudson (Dykes), was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis in 2013. During that time Mum’s condition has continued to deteriorate at a fairly rapid pace and is now a permanent wheelchair user and relies on day to day care at just 52. Mum requires support each day to get in and out of bed, get dressed, cook and other activities as she has no use of her lower body and is now also losing use of her right arm.
My mum has spent most of her life, until her diagnosis, as an active serving Police Woman and since then she has continued to work as a civillian within the police force despite the struggles she faces daily. Mum has never asked for any help and prides herself on trying to do as much as she can. Recently mum has had to take the decision to give up work due to needing more and more day to day support and also no longer being able to drive her adapted vehicle.
On top of the challenges that mum faces in day to day life, her and Steve have recently been served notice to move from her private rented home and has been left to find somewhere else to live as their landlord is selling the house. After months and months of us both fighting with MPs, councils, local authorities and housing associations we have had no luck with nobody deeming this a priority case.
As a result, Tom (my fiance) and I have decided to build an annexe in our garden so that Mum and Steve are close by for day to day care needs and in case of emergencies.
We have saved and raised £20,000 of our own money on top of the other costs of moving to a bigger house. Now we need your help. If we raise £5000, the total of £25,000 will allow us to get the annexe shell up and complete some of the internal work to provide mum with a nice space to live and maintain her independence. Any additional money raised will go towards the annexe or a new power chair for mum, which she is having to pay for at a cost of £4696!
My mum has worked all her life and never asked for anything, yet now she needs it, she isn’t entitled to anything.
