Story

Hello everyone,

We are second year student midwives and we’ve been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit Tanzania and experience midwifery care. We three girls are very passionate about our learning journey and being able to faciliate nourishing and safe birthing environments for people. With your help, we will go to Tanzania in July 2024 for 3 weeks to deepen our understanding of the importance of safe midwifery practices and to offer support in the local hospitals.

We will spend our time volunteering in Dar es Salaam’s hospitals, experiencing local midwifery care approaches and working within different departments such as birthing rooms and operating theatres. It will be humbling to witness first hand the diversity of care available and we know it will be an incredibly beneficial experience for our careers going forward.

We will use the knowledge and skills from our course so far to help provide care and support to women and birthing people and their newborns, some of whom are in desperate need of healthcare interventions.

We will get the opportunity to see what life is like for a pregnant women and birthing people living in Tanzania and, working with healthcare professionals, we aim to enhance our communication techniques to improve the care of women and to help us become better midwives (especially with our Swahili lessons twice a week!).

We are asking for donations to help us get to Tanzania. This hugely developmental experience comes at a cost, so any money we receive will go towards our accommodation, insurance, flights and much more. There is no donation too big or too small!

10% of the money we raise will be made as a donation to the hospital, to help provide them with some medical supplies including sanitary products, PPE and other essentials. We recognise the difference that a resourced medical department can have - skilled doctors and midwives can provide care so much more effectively when they have the tools they need.

We will also be organising fundraising events during the next year, so it would be great to see you all there!

All donations are hugely appreciated, and we are so grateful for your support!
