    Story

In June 2017 i will be volunteering for a month in Fiji with the charity Think Pacific. I am going to be volunteering in a school helping to teach children basic Maths and English as well as leading PE lessons which will be invaluable experience for my degree.

The money raised will go to Think Pacific, their aim is to improve the lives of Fijian children and communities by providing classroom help and materials, sports coaching and equipment as well as fun extra-curricular activities in order to encourage and invest in the youth of Fiji, in an attempt to escape this continuing cycle of poverty.

Below are a few figures that Think Pacific are helping to improve:
75% of children live below the poverty line.
Only 50% of children have access to adequate sanitation and fresh water.
5% of children gain an early years education.

Thanks to Think Pacific and all their volunteers over the years there has been a 40% increase in literacy, a 600% increase in sport, over 40 teachers trained annually, a 15% increase in school attendance and over 20,000 children have been supported through their projects. I hope to make the same impact that previous volunteers have made.

Fijian sport, especially at youth level, longs for some organisation, structure and the introduction of basic equipment. It's not unusual for kids to trek several miles to a neighbouring village to share a rugby ball, or for island teams to have to bow out of competitions because they don't have enough hockey sticks, boots, a pitch or goal posts. In a country where sport can lift and unite the nation, many of the most talented players are never discovered.

Over the next few months i will be participating in numerous fundraising activities including Nottingham 10k to try and raise the total cost of this trip which is £2500.

Any contributions will be hugely appreciated no matter how little as every penny will help the Fiji children and their families. Thank you!
