Story
Maasai tribes in Kenya are nomadic by nature. Their grazing lands are being reduced more and more through tourism which means that limited access to water increases the risk and effects of drought for the people and their livestock.
This could be helped through increasing the knowledge and ability of the tribes to market and sell the goods they craft by hand, meaning that they can buy water and other products if needed.
The aim of this volunteering programme is not only to help teach these valuable business skills, but also to help preserve their unique culture, which in itself is a historic and iconic way of life.
I have carried out research in the past about the impact of the changing environmental and economic climates on these communities and I am passionate about going to help them in the small way I can, and hopefully make an impact to their future.
I will be heading to Kenya for 4 weeks in September and will be living with the community in a 'house' belonging to women of the tribe.
I am donating a laptop to the community in order to help the women of the community with marketing and selling their goods, they make beautiful jewellery.
I am also posting environmentally friendly sanitary products with me and things like reusable fabric shopping bags, etc. due to the lack of sanitary products for women and the very strict laws on plastic bags.
I will be collecting these until the 24th August, when I will need to get them sent off. I would be just as grateful for any of these in the place on monetary donations.
I am however planning on using the money raised via this page, to buy educational books for the children, medicines for the village and food for the families when I arrive in Nairobi.

I have always given back to others through teaching drama at a young age, to coaching badminton and becoming a brownie guide leader. As part of my hospitality management degree, my dissertation focused on the effects of tourism on fragile environments - a struggle for the Maasai.
