Story

On Sunday 25 May 2025 we are leading a walk from Egdean near Petworth over the South Downs to Chichester Cathedral.
The walk will be about 18 miles, with a steep climb up onto the Downs - and then downhill all the way! We will start early and the walk will take most of the day. The landscape will be stunning and varied as we pass through the water meadows of the River Rother, sandy heathland, and gradually gain height through ancient woodland of yews carpeted with wild garlic, until we reach the top of the chalk downs where there are breathtaking views. We will follow ancient shepherd paths and bridleways, crossing the South Downs Way, following the path of the Monarch's Way and the Romans' example, marching downhill on Stane Street.
We will then navigate a myriad of old village footpaths stopping briefly at Tinwood Vineyard Cafe for much needed refreshments, and the magnificent 12th Century Boxgrove Priory (founded in 1107) for reflection, and St Peter's Church, Westhampnett, where pilgrims etched their waymarks into the stone and received a Papal Indulgence. Here's hoping we achieve a fast track to Heaven! Our final weary stretch will see us skirting the flint walls of the Goodwood Estate and the back streets of the City of Chichester, until we reach the Cathedral and are met by The Dean, The Very Rev Edward Dowler who will lead us to St Richard's Shrine for evening prayers.
In 2025 Chichester Cathedral is celebrating 950 years since its foundation hence this is the year for this great Egdean Challenge!
