In June 2019, I will be volunteering in Fiji with the charity Think Pacific Foundation (https://thinkpacific.com) to undertake a month long government supported youth development project to help children growing up in rural Fiji and increase opportunities for them.

In the rural villages, over 75% of families live below the poverty line and only 50% of the rural population have access to safe drinking water and proper sanitation. Schools are in a poor condition and devoid of basic materials and many children drop out of education early. Less than 5% of children in rural areas have access to early years’ education. BUT... Think Pacific have been able to improve literacy by 40%, increase sports participation by 600% and completed 60+ building projects.

During the month I will be in the heart of the community, living with a Fijian family to experience more of the culture.The project includes helping in one-to-one tuition, assisting local teachers and sports development in extra-curricular activities.

The cost of the project is £1100 - including 35% volunteer related costs, 33% charity and sustainability, 17% project operations and support, 5% project planning, 7% UK volunteer support, 1% re-investment and 2% promotion (this cost is not including flights). I will funding the cost of this project myself, so any donations at all would be extremely helpful!!
