Story

In February this year my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time. She had beaten it back in 1989 and we all believed she would do it again. However, this was a much more aggressive form of cancer and it had already got into her bones and touched her lungs. We were informed it could not be cured but could be contained. Mum started taking chemotherapy tablets in April, however, the tablets were thought to be damaging her kidneys so she was told she could no longer take them.

In early July my mum started the dreaded chemotherapy. This knocked her for six and on September 17th she was admitted to oncology's acute ward at the BRI. A week later we were given the devastating news that mum had months left with us. To see her deteriorate so quickly was so hard to watch and soul destroying.

The care she received at oncology was amazing although she did need to be placed in isolation. The nurses drew pictures on a whiteboard in her room to try to brighten her day. However, on 22nd October my world fell apart and she lost the fight. It all happened so quickly it is hard to comprehend.

Whilst in isolation mum could not keep herself warm so had 4 or 5 blankets and a heater to try and keep her warm. She hated being cold. My dad, brother and I want to give something back in my mum's memory so we would like to buy some heaters for other patients in hospital fighting this awful disease.

My mum is no longer in pain but I really don't know what I am going to do without my best friend, my beautiful mum.
