During May Bank Holiday Weekend this year myself and 40 others will be cycling from Chester to Cardiff (approx. 170 Miles) to raise money for Repatriation Services Trust (REST) setup in memory of my friend Tom Bassett. Tom was tragically, a year to the date of the cycle ride, hit and killed by a drunk driver in Dubai at the age of 30.

Tom was a keen traveller and always ensured he had full travel insurance, but his family soon realised that the insurance wasn't going to cover the costs of bringing Tom home.

The costs of Repatriation can run into the many thousands but the thought of leaving a loved one alone abroad is far worse.

This is why the Bassett family, with support from close friends and family members, are setting up the Repatriation Services Trust (REST) to support grieving families in their time of need. REST plans on giving both advice and financial support to families, who like them need to bring a loved one home, in order to ease the heightened stress and anxiety around this time.

REST is currently applying for official Charity status and whilst waiting for confirmation, we are all looking for a big surge in fundraising so they can start offering their services ASAP.

Tom was truly a fantastic guy and I can honestly say that I have not one bad word to say about him. Everybody who knew Tom will agreed when I say that he was a role model to so many including myself. I looked up to Tom like a big brother and will continue to do so! He was without a doubt the coolest and nicest guy I’ve ever met. Tom will continue to inspire me to travel, explore and mostly to be a nice guy who’s liked by so many. I will never forget the memories that we both shared. There is no better tribute to such a legend than a Charity setup in his name to assist others in their darkest times. Rest in peace Tom!
