Story

I will be running the Edinburgh half marathon on Sunday 27th May 2018 in support of Wee Joe. I will let Joe tell you his story:

Hi, my name is Joe and I am 6 years old. On Friday 9 February 2018 my Mummy and Daddy sadly found out I had a brain tumour.

If any of you are wondering how they knew, I had a very squint eye and a very sore head. After a fast trip to the Opticians and Queen Margaret Hospital, I was rushed over to the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh. That night, after having my very first CT Scan (and getting a super cool certificate) I had to go for an emergency lifesaving brain operation. Mummy and Daddy were told that I had a brain tumour and fluid had built up on my brain that needed to be removed immediately or I could die. Despite all this, I was up playing on Saturday night and eating McDonalds (I’m a little fighter who loves Chicken Nuggets).

On Tuesday 13 February 2018, I had lifesaving open brain surgery to remove the brain tumour at the back of my head. Although I tried so hard to be strong, this made me very poorly. By this point my collection of cool certificates grew to 4 for MRI Scans, a HUGE operation and fighting like a superhero to get well again. A few days later the Doctor made Mummy and Daddy very happy when he told them he removed 100% of my tumour.

However, sadly I need to keep on fighting because Mummy and Daddy were told my tumour was cancerous. Although it was removed I’ll still need months of treatment. It was a Medulloblastoma Tumour which is a pretty big word for me. It’s the second most common type of cancer in children.

I am now in Germany for 3-4 months to have Proton Therapy. After that I’ll need 36 weeks of Chemotherapy at Edinburgh Sick Kids. It’s going to be very tough for me and all of my family but a good friend told my Auntie that a family who stick together can beat the world.

During my treatment I have been told I will have good days where I can play and go to School and bad days when I need to rest.
