Next year I shall be spending 2 weeks volunteering in and around the area of Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka. I shall be rehabilitating and conserving the local environment as well as supporting local schools by teaching and training young children in sports to improve their future prospects.
During the first week of volunteering I shall be involved in the restoration and conservation of the local animal and plant habitats. I shall be involved in beach and river clean ups which aim to restore Sri Lankas natural beauty and provide a nicer environment for the local wildlife and people. I shall also be taking part in rainforest replantations which aim to restore the local rainforests to their original state after the colonial period destroyed indigenous plants and wildlife for tea plantations. I shall also be working in a local turtle hatchery and animal hospital, where the main focus will be to restore animals back to their health and release them back into the wildlife.
In the second week of volunteering I shall be volunteering in local schools helping disadvantaged children to unlock their potential and maximise their development in sport by training them at 'grass routes level'. This benefits their future as it increases their chances of getting into local universities and having a succesful career in sport, something that can be difficult for young people in Sri Lanka. The assistance of Travelteer volunteers allows the children to expand their abilities in different areas of sport which will benefit their career prospects in the future, resulting in them having a better standard of living later on in life.
The amount I aim to raise will cover the cost of my flights, allowing me to volunteer in Sri Lanka. As well as this, the money shall also be given to Travelteer Impact, the charity providing me with the opportunity to do this and who are involved in improving and sustaining the life and community of Sri Lankan people.
