    Story

On Valentines day, 2017, while working in the Philippines, I joined my good friend Kimberly Fisher Horan, RJ Garcia and local Filipino celeb Mikey Bustos to help distribute apples to underprivileged children. Being eternally single, it was novel to have "plans".

I wasn't sure what to expect. The poverty we were faced with about an hour out of Manila shocked me. The smiles on the faces of these children who, by western standards, had nothing, was inspiring.

I will be the first to admit that there were times when I would back and complain...I don't have this, I don't have that. My parents told me that in the years after WW2, they were given apples as a gift at Christmas, and they were happy. I should be happy. Since February 2017 I learned that although my life may not be perfect, I have so much to be grateful for.

Working in the healthcare industry, I decided that I would like to fund a Ligo Day. Ligo in Tagalog means bath, and it is a day when children are taught about personal hygiene. Water tankers are bought in to villages with little or no running water, and children are taught the importance of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste and towels.

Since living in Europe, I have always said that I will swim across the Hungarian sea, Lake Balaton. Something always came up and I missed out. This year, I will finally do it. A 5km open water swim seems a fitting way to raise money for a lot of happy faces and a giant soapy water fight.

For safety reason, the swim will take place along one side of the lake, from Balatonfured to Tihany, rather than across the busy shipping channel.

We will start at 8am on September 2nd, when my volunteers and I will head down to the starting point, and 2-3 hours later I hope to crawl (or be dragged) out the other end. My volunteers will keep an eye on me from a boat.

Please give what you can, and help me reach my target. All funds raised will be doubled by my employer, NES Healthcare UK.

I love to give. I tend to take on more than I should. This event is no exception. With very little training I will embark on a 5km open water swim. Supporters have booked flights, boats and busses have been arranged, doctors will be on hand, so there is no backing out now.
