I am a Nursing student at University, going into my second year and I am planning to go to Ghana for an elective placement with the charity called Dream Big Ghana @ www.dreambigghana.com

The charity hosts healthcare, teaching and football coaches to volunteer in the local community. It also provides safe toilets to all the local villages in Ghana.

I will be staying for 4 weeks at the dream big Ghana lodge, with 2 other student nurses and one medical student.
I will do a 2 week placement in the community, similar to our district nurses however, these nurses move around clinics in villages and offer services and treat those that cannot get to hospital. I will be caring for anyone who comes to clinics, elderly, children, pregnant women etc. In the clinics, there aren’t doctors, but there are medical assistants which are equivalent to nurse practioners.
The other 2 weeks will be a placement in a district hospital which serves a population of 150,000 with 110 beds. The hospital offers nearly every service from maternity, child health, surgery to dentistry. In the district hospital, there is a nursing school so I will be able to work with student nurses from Ghana.

I hope to gain some amazing experience going to Ghana for my elective placement! I will encounter a completely different way of nursing to what I am being taught here in the UK and hope to gain some more insight to what nursing practice is and learn how to practice nursing when there are not as may resources at hand.

I love being a student nurse as it a privilege to be let into someone’s life when they need help.
