Story

In January 2025 Facework started work on transforming an old pharmacy in New Cross into a community Maker Space. Working with some of the 200 sanctuary seekers we have worked with over the last year the space has become a new home from which to host our weekly employability training programmes as well as a space where local people and refugees can make things and develop their own businesses.

In March of this year the space was grafitied, and although the debate surrounding graffiti is complex, (with arguments both for and against it, ranging from its potential as a form of artistic expression to its negative impact as vandalism), it still felt disheartening.

But we want to respond positively and are using this Just Giving page to also raise funds to design and commission a local signwriter/artist to create a new artwork "WELCOME TO NEW CROSS' on the shutters which hopefully won't be targeted. We'll also create a special 'TAG' wall for those who might want to express using spray cans.

Can you help us raise funds ? We'll use some of the funds raised to invest in a special anti-grafitti covering on the new artwork to protect it and, who knows, if we raise enough funds we could run some creative sign writing courses and graffiti art activities.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, I will withdraw funds directly. It's the most efficient way to donate and saves time and costs.
