Story
VSO is the world's leading independent international development organisation that works to eliminate poverty around the world
7 volunteers in Makueni, Kenya are working with people abled differently in St. Patrick's Makueni Vocational Training and Rehabilitation Centre. Our aim is to empower the youths through employability skills, hence the need for inclusion of all members.
We have identified during our stay in Makueni County and through working with self-help groups of people with disabilities, there is a major lack of effective communication between deaf and non-deaf people due to the lack of sign language being taught. This leaves those with hearing impairments completely marginalised in the community.
Therefore, we are proposing a 3-day sign language training program in which the relatives of children with hearing impairments can attend, to learn sign language and so they will be able to communicate.
All donations will go towards the cost of the program, including the cost of the trainer and transport for the attendees
We hope that those who attend will teach others in the community and that the program can continue in the future
