Story

Malawi Smiles

Malawi Smiles is a small, and very hands-on, project working with a group of girls in Nchalo, Malawi. These girls have lost their parents, and are cared for by the extended family. Very often, families cannot afford to send these girls to school, preference being given to boys.

Malawi Smiles is a one week residential workshop for 70 girls. The aim is to build their self-esteem, impart some skills, and share some fun.

You can read about last year's workshop here: 2016 Workshop

This year, the workshop is being run by five volunteers from the UK. These ladies are paying their own fares and costs while in Malawi. All the funds raised go to buying the resources for the workshop, hiring school premises for the week, and paying for the food for the girls.

The total cost of the workshop is £3,500. £1,200 of this is the cost of the premises and the food. We have spent £2,300 on the various resources we are taking, such as books and stationery. We have held a number of fund-raising events and have received several donations. But right now - with less than a month to go - we are still £850 short.

We are asking for your help. You can be sure that every penny raised goes to support these girls. There are no administration costs (apart from JustGiving fees), and the volunteers pay for themselves.
