A few years ago, as we were preparing for my oldest son's birthday celebrations, the door bell rang, and there stood Mohammed - I believe he was 12 years old at the time - and his mum. They had found my wife's purse next to her car on the street outside, and knew straight away from the photo of the driver's license that the purse belonged to her. There was money in the purse, and irrespective of the offers, she refused any money as a way of thanks.
They lived quite nearby, housed in a room in a big building which is being used here in cologne to accommodate the many refugees arriving here on a daily basis. All six of them, four boys, mum and dad, living in a room the size of an average living room. Over time, I got to know them a bit more; kids sort of started attending school; always asked how I was; she gave birth to yet another boy (hoping this might improve their chance of permanent residence); I got Mohammed a bike; helped them with official residency paperwork....
After nearly two years, they got sent back to Bosnia last Summer, and although they feared that this would happen, and fought hard against it, there was not much anyone could do. They were just one of the many facing the same fate.
I got a call from Mohammed a few months back, and he was asking me to help them financially. They were living in a squalor and his brothers were very ill. I had never given them any money, and told Mohammed that I cannot send them any money, but will try and see how I could help them. After some research, I came across Pharos, a charitable non-profit organization:

I contacted them via email, and their local person actually went to visit the family and sent me a full report, plus ideas of how they could be helped. I donated some money to Pharos today, then decided to also put this up here.
