Mapa (Measham, Appleby, Packington, Austrey) HS2 Action is a local voluntary group, supported by all the Parish Councils of the villages affected. It was set up after two large public meetings to develop the case against an HS2 route change and to support local people in making their responses to the consultation. Many people are giving their time but we need some money – for example to print leaflets and posters and to pay for meeting rooms.

In 2012/3 HS2 consulted on a route past the villages of Austrey, Appleby Magna and Parva, Measham and Packington. Local people were overwhelmingly against HS2 which brings no benefit to residents who have very poor public transport links. These will not be improved in any way by HS2.

In November 2016, nearly 4 years after the consultation, HS2 and Department of Transport announced a changed route. This ‘new’ route was assessed, by HS2, in 2012 and judged to have a worse impact on residents in terms of noise and on protected environmental features than alternative options identified. In 2013 the Government endorsed this view when they presented their original preferred route.

Local people are now faced with a less favourable route which appears to have prioritised issues to do with big business and cost savings over effects on residents, further fragmenting the countryside and environmental impact. We have been given a very short period to respond. The consultation closes on March 9th 2017.
