Story
After four unforgettable years living in Japan, I’m saying goodbye and giving something back in perhaps the only sensible way: by cycling the entire length of the country. I’ll be pedalling and camping over 3,000 kilometres (1,800 miles) to raise money for two causes close to my heart: protecting forests and helping young people build better futures.
I'll be donating 1 yen for every kilometre I cycle and I'd like to invite you to join me, whatever you can give. Every donation will be split equally between these two charities doing remarkable work:
Cool Earth is a British charity that protects rainforest and tackles the climate crisis by helping the Indigenous peoples and local communities who live in the forest to protect it. They have an impressive track record: 99% of the rainforest in the areas where they work remains intact. Their approach has been backed by independent research and is championed by Sir David Attenborough.
Mirai no Mori —meaning “Forest of the Future” — is a Japanese charity that empowers marginalised young people through outdoor and nature programmes. Working with abused, neglected and orphaned young people, they use experiences in nature to build confidence, resilience and the skills to shape their own futures. They’ve already reached over 4,000 children across Japan, with numerous programmes, some of which also support forest health.
3,000 km is a long way to pedal. With your help, I’d love to make every one of them count — for the next generation of forests, and the young people who will inherit them. If you’d like to sponsor the distance, how about:
* ¥1 every 10 km → ¥300 / £1.50 total
* ¥5 every 10 km → ¥1,500 / £7.50 total
* ¥1 every 1 km → ¥3,000 / £15 total
* ¥3 every 1 km → ¥9,000 / £45 total
* ¥10 every 1 km → ¥30,000 / £150 total
But of course anything you’d like to give is incredibly welcome (Note, when you donate, you can select the tip to Justgiving to be anything from zero up by selecting 'enter custom amount').
And if you can’t donate, sharing this page or taking a look at the work of these two brilliant organisations would mean a lot too.
Looking forward to checking the fundraiser at my next camp spot! Thank you!
