Since 2016 I have been the Obstetrician attached to the Cardiff & Vale Perinatal Mental Health team. Before this involvement I had been unaware of the breadth and effectiveness of their work and their resource constraints, mirrored throughout the UK. PMH teams save the lives of women and improve the life chances of their children. The MBRRACE report 2021 shows that suicide remains the cause of most direct maternal deaths during pregnancy and in the year following the birth of her baby.
