I am very passionate about medicine and I have done voluntary work placements in order to gain more medical knowledge and get a better understanding of being around patients and working in the hospital environment. I think a good doctor is somebody who is obviously very intelligent, however, I believe it is important for them to be extremely passionate about what they do, compassionate and able to emphasise completely with patients. In my past experience, I have seen patients with heartbreaking life-changing diseases and when you are a doctor, you can't be a robot. The reason I want to go over to Gambia is to help the less fortunate with their illnesses and daily life struggles. Diseases such as Aids, Malaria etc are currently a big issue in Gambia and I want to help whether this is treating patients or conducting research. There is also many people suffering from eye conditions which are easily treatable and preventable. I hate to be a massive cliche but I do think I could make a difference during my time there. I will be working in different medical environments. I am going to be holding some training sessions on health awareness such as basic eye hygiene so that the local people are able to prevent the spread of eye conditions that can be contagious. With the funding, I also want to get a collection of sunglasses together that can be distributed to the locals to help prevent eye damage from the fierce rays of the sun. It doesn't seem much, but something so small can have such a great impact on their lifestyle. I want to use some of the funding to take over medical supplies such as paracetamol, first aid etc. I am also going to go to the local school and help the children with reading. Some of the children are orphans so on Christmas day myself and a few others will be making the day special for them. I will be holding a number of activities at my college, schools and with different companies. Please help my funding, even if it's just donating a £1! Thank you X
