Story
I had the chance to meet Royd Tolkien at Wales Comic Con in 2014. He is such a genuine and kind man so it was heartbreaking to find out that his younger brother Mike had been diagnosed with ALS in 2012. Sadly Mike passed away from illness in 2015.
Following in his great-grandfather's footsteps, Royd is going to honour his brother's memory by inspiring people to remember that life is short and every single day is worth living to the full.
Royd is going to do this by making a film/documentary about his and his brother's experiences called 'There's a Hole in my Bucket.'
Mike created a unique bucket list that he did not have the chance to fulfill so Royd is going to complete it on his brother's behalf. Where Mike was an adrenaline junkie with adventure flowing through his veins, Royd is a self-confessed wuss. He would much rather prefer to enjoy a cup of tea and spend time in his garden. However he has been inspired by his brother's strength and determination so he has vowed to do whatever this bucket list says - no matter how bold, daring or downright funny - to honour his brother and all victims of ALS.
This is a unique, heartwarming project that reminds us to embrace life and every opportunity it brings. It aims to remind us to keep reaching for the stars. It also tells the story of two brothers and the bond between them.
In my role as a sixth form tutor, I am also encouraging my students to fundraise for this project. However I would like all of my friends and family (and anyone else) to get involved too. Please donate what you can (no matter how little) because you have the power to make such a significant impact simply by raising awareness of such a terrible illness and inspiring generations to seize the day.
'All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.'
~ J.R.R. Tolkien

7 years agoOn 29th November 2016, The Glassworks hosted a cake sale. I admit that I bought the cakes that I donated (safer for everyone -believe me) but Megan W in tutor group 12B baked a beautiful Victoria Sponge, a German lemon drizzle cake and 24 cupcakes. We raised £50 for 'There's a Hole in my Bucket' which is astounding! You can never go wrong with cake. With this, we have now hit £100 of our £500 target. I am so happy that we have managed to pull together such a successful event! Thank you to everyone who donated!

8 years agoThis is the picture of when I got to meet Royd Tolkien in 2014. He is a lovely guy and I personally admire him so much for what he is aiming to do. I hope to inspire others around me in the same way that he has inspired me. If you can, please support Royd's project :)
