Story

On the 29th of October, 2021, my dad suddenly passed away.

He was living in Cambodia, working at the Khmer Times, and because of Covid restrictions hadn't seen his wife in nearly two years. The last time I saw him was three years ago. He had been planning on coming back to the UK once borders opened, and was looking forward to retiring in Thailand with his wife.

Dad was a dedicated and brave journalist, clever and funny, and had treasured friends from all over the world. He loved walking and nature, and had some of his happiest times in Oxford where he went to university. When his career took him abroad, 13 years ago, my sister and I missed him greatly.

I would like to mark his passing by walking 100 miles (or 114 to be exact) from Oxford to London, along the Thames Path. This is a walk he did just before I was born, so I would be quite literally following in his footsteps. I'd like to raise money for the John Schofield Trust. This is a cause I think would be very close to his heart, as a charity which seeks to improve social mobility and increase diversity in UK journalism. The charity was set up in memory of John Schofield, a BBC reporter who my dad worked with in his time at Channel 4 Daily.

Any donations in memory of my Dad will go to the charity and will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
