Story

Professor John Mumford died suddenly at home on 29th December 2022. John's life spanned the globe, as did his impact, he was a trusted and respected figure in our lives who will be dearly missed. Alongside being a loving husband to Megan, and father to Will, John was a Professor at Imperial College London.

John's memorial will take place on 2nd March 2023 in Windsor, Berkshire, UK.

In memory of John, people have asked the family of their wishes regarding flowers. The family have decided that it would honour John best to set up this page and anybody who wanted to could make a donation to The Windsor Boys' School Boat Club instead. John was a Trustee of the Club, and Will rowed with the Club whilst attending the School. So, a little about The Windsor Boys' School Boat Club:

The Windsor Boys’ School Boat Club is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation whose objects are the further advancement of education of pupils at The Windsor Boys’ School (TWBS) by providing or assisting in the provision of rowing facilities. The Club retains and enjoys a close association with the School. I am the Treasurer of the Boat Club, and also Co-Chair of Governors at TWBS.

The Club provides equipment and coaching to enable young people aged 13-19 to row, and operates from beginner to international representational level. The Club is highly respected in the rowing community and achieves considerable success, despite many and varied challenges, through the strong and inspiring leadership of the Director of Rowing who instils a culture of dedication, focus and hard work across the Club.

The Club is self-funded, and relies on a dedicated group of parents to fundraise just to over operating costs. Equipment is funded by specific grants and donations, and many activities are carried out during the year to raise funds to keep the club running. Despite restrictions on resources, the highly skilled and dedicated coaching team coach around 100 boys to racing standard every summer, with much success.

In recent years, the Club has experienced particular success in the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta, winning the Fawley Cup (Junior Quad Sculls) in 2017, 2018 and notably in 2022, when the two Club crews entered into the competition both qualified for the final, ensuring the Club regained the Trophy. National success has also come to the Club, again particularly in 2022, when the Club won International representation has been achieved with some regularity in recent years, but this should not undermine the incredible achievement that this represents for a comprehensive state school, reflecting the work and dedication of all involved.

John was a valued Trustee who brought his significant experience and wisdom to the Club with grace and dignity. The Club is grateful for his service and deeply saddened by his passing. We are grateful for his wish to consider the Club at this sad time and will ensure a suitable memorial is created.
