    Story

A few years ago I was lucky enough to spend three months volunteering in Cambodia that changed my life, meeting incredible people and being overwhelmed by the kindness and friendship i encountered.

One person in particular was my counterpart Sok Hy. I Spent the three months living with Sok Hy more than just helping with the language he became a great friend, with a shared sense of humour and enjoyment of the silly things in life like me.

I had a chance to stay with Sok Hy's family for a week in their village and had an amazing time meeting all his family who treated me like a son. One year later after the experience had finished I once again returned to Cambodia and again stayed with Sok Hy's family who refused to allow me to contribute to my staying there costs and provided me with amazing food every day. I feel privileged to have another home from home in rural Cambodia.

Sok Hy is one of the hardest working people i know, working in a state school and teaching in the evenings after work. Having seen him teach and how much he cares for his students, it inspires me every day i go to work training to be even half as good as him as a teacher.

Sadly his Mother now needs to have a serious operation. Unlike here in the UK where we are lucky to have free healthcare, the public healthcare system in Cambodia cannot provide the services needed for this operation and so they are having to go to a private clinic. This is incredibly expensive relative to the average incomes in Cambodia and they sadly don't have the ,money to cover the costs as much as they are trying to raise it at home, even with Sok Hy working a crazy amount of hours, whilst also supporting the cost of his sisters education.

I have tried to help out as much as I can and I am asking if you can contribute anything at all, even £1 it really goes a long way in Cambodia and will help hugely in covering the medical costs. Thank you so much for your support it means a huge amount.

His mum has had the operation now and it looks like it has gone well, she is just resting up and recovering now in Phnom Penh before returning home. I will keep you updated when this happens. I am going to leave the page up for a bit longer to see if we can get even more to help with the medical costs, then i can transfer it over to them when they get back home to Pursat. I will again keep everyone updated with when i have done this. As they say in Khmer 'arkoun' Thank you

I can safely say this is the first time in a long time i have truly felt overwhelmed. When i put this page up i thought we would maybe get £100-£150 pounds which would have been amazing. To beat the target of £300 in one day made me quite emotional. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who donated or even if you couldn't donate, shared the link or liked the status to offer support. When i told Sok Hy he simply said "I cannot find the words to describe my feeling now"

I know most people donating here will not know Sok Hy but i think you get a sense of what he is like by one of his favorite quotes. This is someone who set up his own class under someones house so that he could support local children in getting a better education. This on top of teaching full time already in a state school. Sometimes even teaching them for free if they could not afford to pay or get to state school.
