    Story

Transport for London has recently carried out external refurbishment of the disused signal box at Chorleywood station in Hertfordshire which is a locally listed building, which as you can see looks great. The signal box was part of the joint railway operation between the Metropolitan and Great Central railways which ran through Chorleywood. These railways particularly the Metropolitan were very important in the development of Chorleywood as part of Metroland. With the support of Transport for London I and local residents decided to set up an organisation called "The Friends of Chorleywood Signal Box. The aim being to set up an educational and heritage resource, so that our young people could learn about the impact the railways had on the development of the area. We plan displays and working models of the station and goods yard ( now the car park). But before we can do this the inside of the box , and safe access arrangements need to be sorted bearing in mind it is situated on a working railway. It is estimated that these works would cost in the region of £,15,000 we are actively fund raising through a membership of the "Friends" and have received grants from the County Council and the Parish Council, but we now need more help to bring this exciting project to reality. We have a web site https://www.chorleywoodsignalbox.co.uk/ which is under construction please visit, and please support us. We need to preserve these important sites, once they have gone they have gone for ever.

I have been a Chorleywood councillor 36 years and have always been interested in the history and heritage of the area that has been my home for 50 years. I am particularly interested in the railway, which had such an impact on the development of Chorleywood via Metro land .
