James was one of those, suffering from incurable Leishmania. Everybody told Marta to put him to sleep. Save the money. Move on.
Marta couldn't look away. She took James home, she told his story and she found him his forever home, my husband Richard and I. And nine months later, James curled up on Richard’s bed and comforted him during his last hours. As he has comforted me every night since then.
Others would have put James to sleep, would have moved on. Not Marta.
And here she is again, with little Nala, a mixed breed girl, barely a year old.
Two weeks ago, her owners handed her into the vets to be put to sleep. She was sick, they couldn’t afford the vets bills. Life in Greece is hard, for humans and for animals.
For some reason Nala’s legs aren’t working. It started with her rear legs and has spread to her front legs. She has feeling, but no movement.
Despite treatment with antibiotics and physiotherapy, things haven’t improved.
The options are to either put her to sleep, or to take her to the veterinary hospital for neurological, thyroid function, blood and toxoplasmosis tests and to biopsy the muscle.
Again, people are telling Marta to put Nala to sleep. Save the money. Move on.
Only she can’t do that.
Because for the last twelve days Nala has been wagging her tail at her, she’s been licking her face and cuddling into her arms. She loves Marta and Marta loves her back.
Marta the rescuer’s life is hard. She witnesses unimaginable suffering. She feels helpless and overwhelmed. She cries herself to sleep at night.
Marta needs Nala's love and she needs this chance to work a miracle, to give a little dog back the use of her legs, to keep herself strong, and to keep rescuing.
