The Society of Chinese Medical Practitioners UK (SCMP-UK) is making an urgent appeal for donations to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE) for hospital staff in the UK. PPE required to protect from infection from Covid-19 includes surgical face masks, respirators, goggles, gloves, and gowns. 

Currently, all frontline hospital staff are treating a rising number of critically ill Covid-19 patients. The highly infectious nature of Covid-19 means that without effective PPE, staff risk high levels of infection themselves. This creates health risks to staff and their families, and also reduces the effectiveness of hospitals in treating patients as time goes on. Staff who contract Covid-19 from patients due to the lack of PPE may also unwittingly transmit the disease to other patients in the hospital.

A national shortage of PPE means that the National Health Service (NHS) is struggling to meet the heightened demand in hospitals treating Covid-19 patients. Medical staff are having to go without PPE, or fashion their own PPE, which has limited effectiveness. To address this, SCMP-UK have sourced high quality PPE manufactured in China. These PPE have been successfully used to protect frontline medical personnel in Wuhan from infection while containing the Covid-19 outbreak there. While they have yet to receive national certification in the UK, they can provide better protection for medical workers who otherwise have none.

With your help, SCMP-UK can obtain these PPE and supply it to frontline medical staff. This would provide them with valuable protection as they continue to provide much-needed medical care and health services. 

Already, SCMP-UK has acquired two shipments of PPE that will arrive in the UK soon. However, medical demand is extremely high, and your help is desperately needed to continue to supply the PPE. Your donations will go a long way in supporting the NHS staff in their efforts to keep us all safe from Covid-19.
