Weʼve raised £280 to help a young woman (named Massah) in Sierra Leone set up a business after recently losing her first baby

Funded on Saturday, 8th September 2018

    Story

As many of you know, myself and Chloe (along with a group of UK volunteers) spent 3 months last Summer living and volunteering in Sierra Leone. We became very close to our host family, including our host sister Massah, who is 23 years old. She was pregnant at the time of our visit and her baby  (Ela) was born soon after we left.

Her baby thrived and was loved very much by Massah and her family, but unfortunately we  recently received the devastating news that baby Ela has passed away. No parent should have to bear the loss of their child; we know the struggles that Massah and her family have to endure on a daily basis and want to support her in continuing her life without Ela.

Massah would like to go back to school and continue her education in September 2018, but for this she needs money. We are raising money to help her set up a petty trading business (selling rice, Maggie seasoning, biscuits, palm oil, etc.) so she can earn an income to support her education and give her opportunities.

Currently, Massah lives in absolute poverty in overcrowded housing (including at least 10 children) without electricity or running water. There are not enough beds for everyone; the beds don't have mattresses and are made of wire. The house becomes flooded during rainy season and the family struggle to earn enough money in the markets to provide food for everyone.

Please help us raise this money so that Massah can earn an income to support her education and her family. The money raised will go directly to Massah and contribute to materials needed to set up a petty trading business on the streets outside her home.

    Thank you so much.

We are Ela Aksoy and Chloe Airey and we volunteered with YMCA and Y-Care International in Sierra Leone last year for 3 months. We lived with Massah and built a close bond with her; we feel devastated by the news and really want to help her in continuing her education.
