Mathews is an enthusiastic medical student who gained a place at medical school in Malawi. He comes from a village outside of the capital of Malawi. I met his father whilst working in the community hospital for my PhD research. His dad is a hospital attendant - similar to a cleaner/runner in theatre.

Mathews is the first of his family to go to university. The family funded his pre-medical year - but then were unable to draw together the funds for Mathews to continue. For the last two years - with your help we have funded his medical school place. We've paid for his fees, some books and a living allowance. For one year this costs about £1000.

Mathews is excelling at medical school, he's just gained a merit in his final exams of second year. He has his placement for next year - he will be starting his clinical years based in the teaching hospital in the Capital city - not far from his home village.
