I'm raising £1000 to Buy a defibrillator for Sheffield Weightlifting Club CIC

Story

I'm walking a mile on my hands to raise £1,000 for Sheffield Weightlifting Club CIC. SWC is a not for profit community gym reducing the barriers to entry for Sheffield to get into strength training and olympic weightlifting. The gym specialises in introducing beginners to the sport of olympic weightlifting and supporting athletes to high levels within the sport.

There is a higher need for defibrillators in/around gyms because sudden cardiac arrest is more likely to happen during or right after exercise, and survival is better when an AED is nearby and used quickly.

A study of 849 cardiac arrests found that arrests at exercise facilities were more likely to be survived than arrests at other public indoor locations, with survival to hospital discharge at 56% in traditional exercise facilities versus 34% in other public indoor places. The same study also found that most documented arrests at exercise facilities happened during exercise, which supports the idea that these are genuinely higher-risk moments.

If we’re prepared, we can save lives.

Any extra funds will go to SWC to help run free community engagement projects for LGBT, over 60s, women in sport and mens mental health.
