    Story

UPDATE: We reached the first £15,000 goal on 20 August after twelve days of solid campaigning. With the sinking of the split ship much recovery and research is required on what the full impact is and this crowdfunder target has been increased to reflect that . This campaign wholeheartedly supports the ”Mauritian Wildlife Foundation” (MWF) NGO and they anticipate that there will be impacts on an island nature reserve (which resembles a coastal forest close to what Mauritius was 400 years ago) called ”Ile aux Aigrettes“ and its fauna and flora. Past studies have also demonstrated that oilspills might lead to the gradual extinction of reptile populations over time. This research and the unknown consequences of the oilspill is resulting in a magnitude of recovery work for MWF who are working tirelessly to protect and look after the environment. From a global perspective we know that more help than ever is now needed to protect biodiversity, marine and wildlife, eco-systems, mangrove forests and more. The first campaign goal might have been reached but if you care about the planet, love Mauritius or have ever admired majestic beaches and golden sands then please donate to help the recovery effort from this unnecessary tragedy in what was and still can be a beautiful paradise.

09 August 2020: The beautiful country of Mauritius - URGENTLY needs help. The Japanese ship "MV WAKASHIO" has spilled oil into its lush tropical waters and Mauritius does not have enough expertise, tools or knowledge RIGHT NOW to deal with this. France and Japan are sending equipment and expertise, but there is more to be done and relief to be provided. The ship contains over 4000 metric tonnes of oil, diesel and lubricants. The environmental impact is massive and cannot be understated. Mauritius is undergoing yet another steep learning curve in 2020. The impact of having an oil spill in these seas will be felt for generations to come but immediate actions and consequences include:

    - Precautionary measures taken by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation to protect the endangered fauna and flora of the following islands: Ile aux Aigrettes, Ile de la Passe, ilot Vacoas and Ile aux Fouquets

    - All hands on deck to manage the containment of the oil and where logical, clearing it from the seas

    - A monumental loss of trade for the fishing and tourism industry

    - Impact on local communities

    - Dire long term consequences for the country's economy, food security and health

    Our Call to Action:

Will you be one of the thousands we are looking for to donate a minimum of £5-£10? The Mauritius Wildlife Foundation is an amazing on the ground NGO providing immediate relief and assistance to affected areas. We are excited to be partnering with such a fantastic NGO who is digging deep in this time of need with its resources to give so much to the country. A little from each of us will go a long way and if we pool the £GBP together we can dramatically extend the reach of their efforts.

Born and raised in the UK I am of Mauritian descent and I personally know how proud Mauritians are of their history, culture and roots. Whether a tourist or a Mauritian living abroad those planning a visit love to dream about that first glimpse of those majestic tropical waters, the lush green landscape before landing in a country that mesmerises with its natural beauty, food, warmth and family feel.

If like me you feel helpless watching this disaster, seeing the oil spread further, discolouring the seas, killing life and tarnishing its beauty - please donate now. It's so important. We need you to spread the word about this grassroots independent and international fundraising project to your friends, family, colleagues, tourists that have been or anyone who has a connection to this paradise. If each person can give just £5-£10 or even more we will have a huge impact on doubling efforts and maximising relief. Whether you are Mauritian and reading this or someone who cares about our precious planet - remember: this is a grassroots initiative created in the UK. Mauritius NEEDS US now more than ever.

Every £ will make a difference:

There are excellent and credible wildlife, eco, and marine organisations in Mauritius who are actively responding to the crisis on the ground and need support from all corners of the world. These NGO’s who are making a difference to all of the country deserve more worldwide recognition and support. This campaign was created from a place of genuine care and a need to help from afar. Progress will be shared on the updates section below including where the funds have been received and how they are utilised. This is so important, because whether or not Mauritius is part of your heritage, the volunteers who are tirelessly sacrificing themselves day and night, the wildlife and habitat of all those special animals, plants and more; the life at stake, the wellbeing of future generations and those majestic blue waters that bring so much joy to the island, its people and all tourists is truly at risk of long-term damage . The consequences are dire.

A minimum donation of £5-£10 is all that's needed. Thank you so much for reading, your contribution and time.

Very sad times as we start to see dead mammals wash up on the shores of Mauritius - on this picturesque island surrounded by blue waters there are many things to be proud of - the beauty of the ocean + its comfort is one of them. The oil spill is a tragedy the whole country + all the diaspora abroad feels. The full impact + consequences of the oil spill remain unknown. What we do know is that the recovery work will continue for years to come and in the meantime the sadness continues.

A video created by Japanese students has been one of the most humbling moments of my crowdfunding campaign. They were horrified by the disaster of Wakashio, the wreckage in the Paradise of Mauritius and the heroic efforts of Mauritian Citizens to stop the spread of the oil - so much so they stepped up to raise awareness + created this (you don’t need a twitter account to view). Its so beautiful. Do watch it. : : https://twitter.com/ActionforMoris/status/1297919899616997377?s=20 They are a testimony to the power of people + future generations
