Story

As a gardening therapist working with older people, I meet lots of people who would love to get out of their house or care home to visit a farm, or go for a trip down a woodland lane once more to see wild flowers.

The problem is that most elderly people need a wheelchair, either all the time, or just in case...but their wheelchairs are not really suitable for outdoor conditions. A special neck support to travel any distance in a wheelchair makes a huge difference. Tyres that can cope with a bit of mud or sand mean an elderly person can go out and take part in a simple activity like picking blackberries for the first time in years. Chairs that feel safe to be in, outdoors, can give freedom to older people who have given up hope of ever going outside again, except for hospital visits.

Getting out into the countryside, or into the community, makes a huge difference to our sense of belonging and wellbeing. It helps us connect to the seasons, to current events, and to family and friends. I want to help senior citizens to start getting back outside, but I need some funding to buy wheelchairs that will allow this, and any small contribution you could make would be a great help.
