Story
Paatalipuram is one of the villages in Trincomalee district. The village is in Muthur East. The village was once evacuated by the people during the civil war in 2006.
people are resettled with the help of government and non-governmental organizations. The majority of the people resettled here are from tribal community of the region. In fact they are few of the remaining tribal population of the Eastern province. The community is generally classified as poor and there are various needs to be fulfilled including proper transport, schooling facilities, palatable drinking water and financial support, to name a few.
The majority of the people depend on labour work for their income, which is daily waged basis. Some do agriculture, fire wood collection, fishing and honey harvesting from wild honey combs. The people have been identified to have the after effects of the war. The most common of them is the lack of financial support to erect their livelihoods. The people have no resources to strengthen their families and community. The lacks of education and opportunities to learning among the people have lasting impact on this. The startling fact identified by the doctors is the malnutrition among the young generation. The amount of malnutrition identified is shocking as the percentage of the kids affected by this 45% among the kids under 5 years old. There are observations made by the doctors suggesting that this could lead to many disorders in future if unattended.
We have been supporting Paatalipuram and surrounding villages by offering medical camps, free medication with the support of Danvantri Hospital. Further we are offering support by creating opportunities to self-employment. Please see our Kaakum Karangal UK face book public page for further information.
