In August 2017, I am flying out to Uganda with my friend Megan to volunteer at Nzirambi Orphans Talent Development Centre (NOTDEC). NOTDEC takes in orphaned, abandoned, or severely malnourished children from an area the size of Wales in a country with a maternal mortality rate 30 times higher than here in the UK. NOTDEC then look after the children, giving them an education before reintegrating them back into the community around the age of 7.

Our role out there is to firstly look after and entertain the children living on site. Most of the children living on site are under the age of 7 and receive school lessons on site. We, however, are out there when it is their summer holiday and as such will be co-ordinating and running activities for the children. These will include arts, crafts and musical activities and as such appropriate resources are needed. Our second role is to go into the community and report back to the UK NOTDEC team on how the older children are getting on with reintegration.

We will be staying with a family friend of mine called Jonny who has set up a profit for purpose social enterprise farm called Agri Evolve which works with local farmers to improve the level of agricultural production. Some of the money raised here will go towards helping them further their work.

The majority of the money will go to resources that will be given directly to the children and orphanage. We have been asked to bring items such as pens, paper, crayons, small balls and musical instruments which will be used by the children in their free time and the activities we run.

To help raise money for this I will be shaving both my head and my beard (of 2 years!) in early August. This loss for me, however, is nothing compared to that of the children you will be helping by donating so we will be hugely grateful for any donations of any size.
