    Story

Hello everyone, we are here to ask for help and support to pay for the fees for our Spouse Visa application. Thank you for taking the time to look at our page.

My husband has lived, studied and worked in the UK since 2007, always contributing to society and paying his taxes. He was hugely successful in his job but the Home Office forced him to stop working whilst his visa was pending, so since 2015 he has been unable to gain an income. I have supported him and picked up extra employment but the fees from the Home Office keep increasing and we are struggling to keep up. That is why we need your help please.

Sadly his last visa application was rejected as he 'hadn't established a life' here in the UK. Apparently having 10 years in the UK, a British wife, living with loving parents-in-law, securing a strong job, and having a close friendship group means nothing. The Home Office wanted to send him back to his 'home country' of Sri Lanka. The fact is that although he was born in Sri Lanka he was only there for 3 months and left as a baby to live elsewhere, so he actually has no ties there. They wanted to pack him on a plane and send him with no money, just the clothes on his back to a country where he knows no-one, with no place to live and no job.

We made the decision that he should leave the country voluntarily and I could visit him and stay with him as much as my visitors visa would allow. We had an appointment with the Home Office within 2 working days of the decision so we planned to inform them of all the plans in person so they could update their systems with us present...but when he got to his appointment they took him to one side and held him for 5 hours, no interview, no explanation. I wasn't allowed in so was waiting outside in the cold. Until at 6pm we were both informed separately that he was being detained. Words can't explain what I felt at that moment. I couldn't even see him before they took him away. He was held in a detention centre for 3 WEEKS. It's basically a 'reformed' prison and he was living with rapists and murderers. We fought for bail but the Home Office refused, even though he had everything to prove he was ready to leave the UK. They were making a point, that they could control him and break him. We took it to the courts and won easily - thankfully the judge had common sense and was rather baffled and frustrated by the Home Office's actions and why he was detained in the first place place, let alone still being held. He was released the same day and we left as soon as we could get flights.

The Home Office has tried to split us, told us to continue our relationship as husband and wife in 2 countries using 'modern means of communication such as Skype'. How ridiculous! We don't understand how this can even be suggested, and it is against my Human Rights as a British citizen to not be allowed my husband with me. We are now applying for a new visa so he can come back to the UK and live with me and my parents once more. I can only visit him for one month at a time as per my visitor visa rules so have to pack up and leave him which is so hard...but they will not break us.

My husband and I love each other so much and despite the pressure and stress the Home Office has put us under we have remained strong, and actually grown even stronger together. But it's not just us that this is affecting - it's our family and friends too. My husband has an amazing relationship with my parents who we were living with and they miss each other so much. Phone calls are just not the same - how can they be? My elderly nan struggles with her health and he helped her out whenever she needed it. It just seems so wrong to split such a close family because of the country he was born in.

We have so many plans for our future and we are desperate for this to work so we can start living a 'normal life' and start a family of our own. Our lives are just on hold at the moment until we can get this sorted.

    Where the money will go:

    - £1523 spouse visa application fee

    - £1000 IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge - this has DOUBLED in cost since start of the year)

    - £1000 lawyers fees

We realise this is a big ask but any help you can give, no matter how little, is so very greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Needless to say it was a long wait and we barely slept. But at 1pm the next day we were first in line and we are THRILLED to say we were SUCCESSFUL in our application!! We cannot express the emotions we felt - relief, excitement, happiness, frustration at why it had been this hard in the first place. Of course there were tears. I am so pleased I (Mel) was with Venu to get his results and of course we are so happy to now have home back home and we can start our normal lives at long last.

Hello everyone and sorry for being so quiet of late. There was a lot going on and it has been a rather emotional few weeks. On Monday 13th we received a message from VFS (the body that handles visa results in the Middle East) saying the decision was in and to come and collect. There was no suggestion of what the decision actually WAS (i.e. accept of reject) so we had to wait...19 PAINFUL HOURS before the centre opened for results.
