Weʼre raising £20,000 to Pay half towards my mastectomy and procedures, following breast cancer
Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.
The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.
On 21.12.2017 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer.
Due to the size and amount of tumours, I need to have a mastectomy (once my chemotherapy treatment is complete) and all of my lymph nodes removed (originally 80%, until rechecked recently). Further tumours have also been found (May 2018) so additional (unplanned) treatment is now also required.
My preferred option is to have both breasts removed, as I will always be worried about the cancer spreading/returning otherwise (I have also been advised I have a very high risk of the cancer returning), so I'd rather choose this option to eliminate any chance of this happening. My consultant has requested reconstruction a year later, due to the impact this will have on me and my body. However, under my Private Medical Insurance I can only have the diseased boob removed (and reconstructed). Therefore the only option for the double mastectomy is to self pay half of this, which is going to cost me thousands (for the removal and reconstruction).
I am awaiting a definitive figure for the operation and reconstruction costs, however, I have been advised this could cost in the range of £20,000 if not more. This figure is just an estimate though. I will put the exact price once known.
As you can imagine this figure is a lot to pay and practically impossible, especially when I only have my salary to rely on.
Unfortunately both of my parents are deceased, I lost my mum to cancer when she was 37 years old, so relying on my parents is not an option either.
Also, because I have gone down the private route, the NHS is also not an option. I therefore need to raise the first half of the operation costs near Autumn/Winter of 2018 and then the remainder within 1 year, so as you can most likely understand, this is adding additional stress.
The Consultant has also advised that due to it being a complicated surgery, the mastectomy will be completed in separate stages, the diseased side being removed including all of the lymph nodes. Then radiotherapy to target the cancer again and then physiotherapy to ensure I don't lose movement or use of my arm. After this, it will be a further operation to remove the other breast.
The following year (once all areas have healed) the surgeon will start building the breasts, this will include installation of a balloon under the skin to help stretch the skin, which is a long process in itself, skin transplants from various areas of the body and possibly pig tissue transplants also.
Anything donated would be really appreciated, whether it be one penny or £1 and should anyone donate, I'd be more than happy to keep you updated with the progress, photos, information of the procedure etc.
Thank you for reading.
