Story
I am 38 years old. In 2007 I was diagnosed with a rare disease called Limb Girdle muscular Dystrophy type 2B. It's a slowly progressive disease which affects my legs and later will affect my shoulders, in the past year I've been confined to a wheelchair. I live in a bungalow with my husband and 10 year old twins, we both work full-time my husband is 62 years old.
I applied twice for a Disability Facilities Grant but was unsuccessful because we both work, we pay mortgage so having our own property as well does not help.
I use a bath at home which has a bath lift, the problem is without my husband I cannot independently access the bath. If my husband is not there it's not safe for me to get to the bath, my legs have no strength, I cannot get out of the wheelchair on my own.
On the 1st of June I had a fall and pulled the ligaments in my right ankle, a week after I had another fall this time it was ligaments in my right knee.
The only option for me is to have a wet room, so I can sit in the wheelchair and have a shower without worrying about transfer.
I had three different quotes from various companies which range from £9000 - £12300, it's a lot of money for a wet room, however having the work done properly is key, This wet room in the long term will last a long time, if not done properly will cause a lot of problems.
I've always cope and tried not to ask for anything but it's getting so hard, and the council just won't help because I'm working, if I pack up work I'll have nothing, My brain works, it's just my mobility, please if any one could help this will change my life drastically, I will be safer at home and have some of my independence back.
