Weʼve raised £560 to Mental Health in Sri Lanka

    Colombo, Sri Lanka
Funded on Friday, 31st August 2018

    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

I have been accepted onto a voluntary SLV.Global Mental Health Programme and will be flying to Colombo in Sri Lanka August 2018 to complete a 5-week placement.

The Sri Lankan population has faced significant hardships after a civil war lasting over 25 years and the effects of the 2004 tsunami. As a result, the country is still recovering and is in need of more psychological support than current resources can provide. SLV.Global’s primary aim is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and to bolster resources at pre-existing initiatives in local communities.

On my placement I’ll work at a minimum of six different weekly projects throughout the duration of my stay whilst living integrated within the community, like a local, in a Sri Lankan family. SLV.Global’s focus is on mental health and the aim of my work will therefore be to promote overall well being, increase confidence and feelings of accomplishment as well as self-worth.

This will be a great way to get hands-on experience in the mental health sector with people of various ages and abilities. The placement will also introduce me to alternative methods for prevention and treatment of mental health issues. The projects are diverse ranging from work in psychiatric hospitals, residential care homes, make-shift classrooms in temples to community outreach projects where I’ll teach English and model life skills to youths and at-risk children. I will be expected to be creative in a clinical setting and think about the best way to help individuals at varying stages of their recovery.

On arrival, I’ll receive training given by local mental health practitioners and professionals in order to understand treatment in a different culture. An example of one of the projects I will participate in is the English for Development project. This will take place in vocational training institutes and, in addition to the practical benefit of learning English, the project focuses on daily skills that are taken for granted and often overlooked including decision-making, problem-solving, effective communication, interpersonal skills and critical thinking. As a volunteer I will help individuals gain self-awareness and develop a healthy way of coping with their emotions and stress.

Money I hope to raise will contribute to the cost of my placement, including training, vaccinations, entry visa, travel insurance and living costs. Any support will be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
