Story
I've been on Lesvos since September 15th, working with One Happy Family, and more recently its partner, The Lava Project.
One Happy Family (OHF) is like no other space I have ever visited. Walk through the gates and you see nothing but smiles and laughter. You see people playing ball games, kids running, card games, the kitchen cooking up something delicious filling the air with mouth-watering scents, a peaceful garden, people learning. This maybe doesn't sound so unusual, but just a few miles away, you will find what is arguably the worst refugee camp in Europe. The camp was created for just 3,000 people and there are 15,000 people currently living there in containers, tents - or nothing. Inside, you have raw sewage running through the pathways, you have people of all different religions and beliefs crammed together, under-fed and under-supported, meaning that fights break out daily. People are sick, they're mentally unwell. Queues for food and toilets are never-ending, meaning that if you want to eat three meals in a day you're going to have to spend the whole day waiting - and their lives are already one big waiting game. But OHF is their haven, their safe space. OHF is where you can be exactly who you are, no prejudices or biases allowed. OHF is said to be the single best place for the mental health of anyone stuck on Lesvos. Not only that but it's a place where they can get food with minimal waiting time, toiletries and access to medical assistance.
But OHF relies solely on donations and it is running out of money. It takes £1,200 to run the centre for one day - one day of peace for refugees fleeing from war and persecution who have found themselves stuck in this seemingly never-ending process.
I would also like to support The Lava Project. The Lava Project is a laundry facility that washes the clothes of the most vulnerable people in Moria - kids, families and those suffering from scabies - a skin condition that is spreading through Moria. Working alongside MSF, The Lava Project helps to give scabies sufferers a fighting chance of recovering.
I’m here with a fantastic group of international volunteers and refugees, all of whom work tirelessly to keep these facilities running - but as with anything, in the end, it comes down to money. Please donate whatever you can!
Thank you x

4 years agoI’m so, so happy with everyone’s generosity. Thank you to everyone! The situation here is getting worse all the time. It reminds you how tiny you really are - it doesn’t matter how hard we work, the problem is so much bigger than us, and growing. When I first made this page, there were 15,000 people in Moria, now it’s more like 18,000. That’s just in Moria - there are more than 20,000 refugees on Lesvos. OHF is a sanctuary for people stuck here. I can’t actually imagine what people would do without it - so thank you for supporting us ❤️
